Phase 2 Clinical Trial for Patients Experiencing
Vaso-occlusive Crisis of Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is one of the most prevalent genetic disorders in the U.S., affecting over 80,000 people. It is a chronic condition with substantial illness and death, responsible for more than 75,000 hospitalizations per year in the U.S. One of the most debilitating effects of sickle cell disease is vaso-occlusive crisis, where changes in blood protein cause red blood cells to become rigid and stick inside small blood vessels, causing blockages in blood flow. Pain is the result, and this can require medical care and hospital stays for pain medication. Other medical problems can also occur during vaso-occlusive crisis, complicating treatment and the hospital stay.

GlycoMimetics, Inc. is studying "vaso-occlusive crisis of sickle cell disease" as the first potential treatment focus for its lead investigational drug candidate, called GMI-1070. GMI-1070 is intended to treat vaso-occlusive crisis by reducing the cell adhesion and inflammation that is believed to contribute to blocking the blood flow. GlycoMimetics is evaluating if this may reduce the pain experienced by individuals during sickle cell crisis and shorten time in the hospital. GlycoMimetics is also studying whether this may decrease other medical problems that result from blocking of blood flow.

Phase 2 Clinical Trial of GMI-1070 for Treatment of Vaso-occlusive Crisis of Sickle Cell Disease

In June 2010, GlycoMimetics, Inc. announced the start of a Phase 2 clinical trial of GMI-1070 for treatment of vaso-occlusive crisis of sickle cell disease. Nearly 20 hospitals in the United States and Canada are actively enrolling patients.
