GlycoMimetics, Inc. Sponsors, Presents Abstracts at Annual Glycobiology Conference
Data suggests novel approaches for the treatment of inflammatory and infectious disease
Gaithersburg, Maryland - December 23, 2004 - GlycoMimetics, Inc. (GMI), a privately held firm that is developing a new class of glycobiology-based therapies for a broad range of indications, today announced the availability of electronic versions of the abstracts it presented at Glycobiology 2004, the largest annual gathering of glycobiologists world-wide.
The two abstracts describe the results of a series of experiments that demonstrate the use of carbohydrate mimics to inhibit inflammation and to inhibit the binding of a bacterial protein involved in P. aeruginosa infection. The experiments show it may be possible to develop novel therapies based on carbohydrate mimics for a broad range of diseases in humans.
"These results point to a new approach for tackling diseases of inflammation, " said GMI Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President John Magani, Ph.D., who performed the experiments and presented the abstracts. "They also show potential for a novel way of slowing or stopping the spread of bacteria, through inhibition of bacterial adhesion."
"The company's next steps will be to continue testing these and other compounds in additional models of disease, with a view to selecting compounds to move forward into pre-clinical development," said Rachel King, GMI's Chief Executive Officer.
GMI is a sponsor of this year's annual conference, which convened in Honolulu, Hawaii in November. This year's event marked a joint gathering of the Society for Glycobiology and The Japanese Society of Carbohydrate Research.
The two abstracts are entitled Pre-organization of the Bioactive Conformation of Glycomimetics for Lectins from Psuedomonas aeruginosa Enhances Activity into the Nanomolar Range, and Pan-Selectin Glycomimetic Inhibitors Inhibit Rolling and Neutrophil Migration in Mouse Models of Inflammation.
